Management TeamOur business is about relationships, and we have a strong management team in place that understands this. They are committed to furthering the development of our financial representatives through training and guidance, so the representatives can establish enduring and solid relationships with their clients. Mark HeurungManaging Partner Mark Heurung started his career with Northwestern Mutual in 1990 as an intern. With the support and guidance of mentor Gene Storms, Mark became a Financial Representative and then Field Director in the St. Cloud office. He was later promoted to Managing Director, providing stellar leadership in the St. Cloud and Edina offices. Mark was named Managing Partner in 2007, succeeding his mentor, Gene Storms. Mark and his wife, Sue, have two daughters, Emily and Heidi. They enjoy spending time at the lake and entertaining family and friends. In his free time, Mark pursues his hobby as an amateur wine collector. Derek Tamm, CLU®Managing Director Derek is a 2004 graduate of St. John’s University with a B.A. in Economics. He interned for 2 years with NML and paid for 60 lives in two summer internships. Following a 5 month escapade with another company after graduating, he returned to NML and was a 200 lives writer his first full year with the company. He personally produced for 3 years and was appointed Managing Director of the St. Cloud, MN office in September of 2007. Just recently, Derek accepted the position of Chief Development Officer of the Columns Resource Group. He was a two time qualifier of MDRT in his first 4 full years with the company. In his personal life, he is married to Melinda, likes to golf, hunt, and travel, and is actively involved in several charitable organizations in St. Cloud, including one he helped start, the Miracle League of Central Minnesota.
Barb TovsenChief Financial Officer Barb started her career in August of 1975 while she completed her last year of high school. She has had several roles within the Network Office, including assistant to the Managing Partner, Director of Operations, and Compliance Officer. In 2002 she became the Chief Financial Officer. Barb earned her FLMI (Fellow, Life Management Institute) designation in 1990, has her Series 7/8 license, and is currently pursuing her CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) designation. Barb has two grown sons, Jeremy and Ryan, and lives in Minneapolis. She enjoys reading, crafts, dancing, and spending time with friends and her very large family. Amanda RyanChief Operating Officer Amanda has been with the Columns Resource Group since December of 2005. In this position, she collaborates with leadership members on anticipating the needs of the agency and planning for its growth and development. Prior to being the Director of Operations, Amanda held several different positions in both insurance and investment operations. Amanda has her life, accident, health, series 6 & 63 licenses. Amanda received her Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Bethel University and her Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Marketing from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls.
Amanda has been a volunteer at the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery for 5 years and participated on the Advisory Committee for 2 years. In her spare time, she enjoys Scuba diving and traveling. Jesse Bergland, CLU®, ChFC®Field Director Jesse Bergland is a Recruiting Field Director with the Columns Resource Group in Minneapolis, MN. In his role as Recruiting Field Director, Jesse is responsible for growing his Network Office through new representative recruitment and development while continuing to develop his personal insurance and investment practice. Jesse began his career with Northwestern Mutual in 2002 as a College Financial Representative. He has held a variety of leadership roles within his office; he served as a mentor after achieving his Pacesetter 40 award, as a College Unit Director from 2006 to 2008, and as a Recruiting Field Director in 2008. Most recently Jesse qualified for Million Dollar Roundtable in 2009. Jesse earned a degree in Finance and Entrepreneurship from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota in 2003. He completed his CLU in 2008, his ChFC in 2009 and his CAP in 2010.
Jesse resides in downtown Minneapolis with his wife Britta, a renewable energy consultant. Jesse is an active member of the Minneapolis Club, Director of Torch Community, an avid golfer, and road biker and most recently completed his third MS150 bike ride. Joshua Oertli, CLU®, ChFC®Financial Representative Josh Oertli is a Recruiting Field Director with the Columns Resource Group in Minneapolis, MN. In his role as Recruiting Field Director, Josh is responsible for growing his Network Office through new representative recruitment and development while continuing to develop his personal insurance and investment practice. Josh started his career as a Financial Representative with the Columns Resource Group in Edina, MN. He began after graduating from St. Cloud State University in 2004, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance. Josh is a continual leader in New Client and Lives production in the CRG and throughout Northwestern Mutual. In 2007, he was awarded the Developing Financial Representative honor and in 2010, he achieved FORUM for the first time. He has served as the Secretary and is the current President of the CRG Foundation. In addition to being an active member of the St. Cloud State Alumni Association, he is also a member of the Million Dollar Round Table and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
Austin BarnesCollege Unit Director Austin began his career as a college intern in May of 2003 while attending St. Cloud State University. He graduated with a B.S. in Finance and started his fulltime career as a Financial Representative with Northwestern Mutual in June of 2004. In addition to running his personal practice, he also helps to recruit and develop college interns located in the Minneapolis office. Austin is married to Heather and they own a condo in St. Louis Park. He recently added a full time associate to help him with his ever growing business, which happens to be his sister. When he is not working Austin enjoys spending time with friends and family as well as golfing and hunting.
