Mark Heurung was appointed Managing Partner of Columns Resource Group in November, 2007. He began his career in college when considering what company to work for. His father had met then Managing Partner, Gene Storms through business and suggested Mark consider a career with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Before he could even contact the office, Gene Storms had called him. Mark's cousin and best friend, Chris, had referred Mark to Gene and asked him to come in for a visit. "Gene didn't mention a thing about insurance," Mark recalled. "He just asked me about what I wanted in life and he talked about opportunities." Five minutes turned into an hour and a half, and it ended with a decision that Mark would join the office as a financial representative intern. "I was drawn in by the lifestyle," Mark said. "I was new in the office and Gene and Ron Schmidt took me under their wings." Mark knew that if he listened to Storms and Schmidt,CLU, ChFC, and worked hard, he could have what they had: financial independence while making a difference in people's lives. Mark Heurung moved to a full- time financial representative contract after achieving what he called "Power of Four" in his internship – securing only four clients. But he knew that the office and its leadership team believed in him. He began to intently focus on his personal production and started seeing success. Mark then advanced to an opportunity in management becoming a field director, and continued to make high personal production. In 1993, he became managing director in St. Cloud, Minn., a position he cherished because he was not only able to coach and develop newer recruits, but also spend more time with the veteran representatives and his role models in leadership. Then, Mark experienced one of the most difficult times in his life – his cousin Chris passed away. Although Mark was grieving, he began to face work with a renewed sense of purpose in his career and life. Shortly after, a new opportunity also presented itself and Mark decided to move to the Edina, Minn., office as managing director. He credits the veteran representatives in the Edina district network office to helping him understand what it takes to make an organization thrive. “They challenged me to grow, and I give them credit for a lot of the growth that we have accomplished,” Mark said. Now as Managing Partner, he expects continued challenges, and continued success. "We are very big on the internship and we are going to have a huge focus on campus," Mark said. "But we are also still trying to define what our interns, what our representatives look like. We are a lives culture, and that is not going to change. But it is going to improve because of cross selling and joint work. It's going to put us in a better position." As he settles into his new position, Mark is anxious to further develop relationships and present his vision. "We are living the vision right now, but think we can work together to enhance it," he said. "I am most looking forward to getting to know everybody and understanding their goals and objectives."
